Oxfordshire people urged to build on their recycling successes
Residents in Oxfordshire are being urged to build on the countyâs success as one of the most waste conscious parts of the country.
A high profile campaign called âthe BIG recycleâ is soon to be launched throughout England. It aims to encourage more people to recycle more of their household waste, more often.
Oxfordshire County Council will be taking part in the campaign, which launches on June 27, by running roadshows at the following locations:
- 25th June â Templars Square, Blackbird Leys
- 30th June - Woolgate Shopping Centre (Farmers market), Witney
- 2nd July - Westgate Shopping Centre, Oxford
At each event there will be:
- Real nappy demonstrations
- Composting experts
- Advice on recycling
- Free sustainable living magazines
- Free reusable bags
- An exhibition of recycling products
Katie Zabel, Waste Management Officer at Oxfordshire County Council, said: âIf we all realised what a massive difference we could make by recycling used packaging, such as soft drinks and food cans, paper, glass, plastic bottles and jars, I think we would all do it.
”Around 30% of people living in Oxfordshire currently recycle. That figure was reached simply by people doing their bit in their day to day lives. The more the word spreads the better are our prospects of reversing the well documented environmental problems the world is facing.
”We can"t go on using plastic bags and other items and just throwing them away when the oil that they are made with will one day run out. We canât carry on land filling rubbish that then ends up emitting gases that badly affect our atmosphere. The big recycle is a chance for people to learn how they really make a difference easily in their everyday life.“
Oxfordshire County Council supports recycling through managing eight recycling centres across the county where you can recycle: cardboard & paper; glass; light bulbs; sheet glass; fluorescent tubes; household batteries; car batteries; televisions; fridges & freezers; computer monitors; plastics; soil; rubble; green waste; metal; foil & cans.
